Founded at our church in 1982, the Community Food Closet continues to operate out of our church, overseen by the Board of Deacons.  The Food Closet provides supplemental groceries to people in need who live in Cape May, West Cape May, Cape May Point and a portion of Lower Township.  It is open on the second and fourth Friday of each month, except for Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving, when we distribute turkeys or hams and other ingredients for holiday dinners on the Friday before the holiday.

Other churches, organizations and individuals in the area support this program through generous donations of food or money or by providing volunteers.  A variety of tasks are done by our volunteers, including registering recipients, organizing paper and plastic bags to carry groceries, unloading food from trucks, delivering groceries to shut-ins, sorting and stocking food on shelves, filling bags with groceries on distribution days, filing reports to participating agencies, and sending thank you notes for donations received.

Packing for shut-ins is done by a group of volunteers on the Thursday before a distribution date, with perishables added to the bags on the morning of distribution.  Deliveries to shut-ins are made by the Kiwanis Club of Cape May.
